Today, I want to share with you why I believe picking a word of the year is a powerful tool for personal growth and how it has transformed my own life. This year, my chosen word is “Simplify”, and let me tell you, it's already making a world of difference.
The Power of Words
Our words have the ability to shape our thoughts, actions, and overall mindset. By intentionally choosing a word to focus on throughout the year, we can direct our energy and intentions towards that specific theme. It's like having a gentle nudge to keep us on track and make progress in our desired areas.
Why is my word for 2024 “Simplify”?
Life has been quite chaotic the past few years due to some challenging circumstances and changes. It’s felt busy, rushed, and exhausting. Many of the challenging circumstances remain, many are things that I can’t change so to help reduce the overwhelm I’m changing what I can – I’m adjusting the sails.
This is why I chose Simplify as my word of the year. I want to bring back the joy of simplicity and create more space for what truly matters.
Streamlining My Life
With “Simplify” as my “guiding star”, I'm taking intentional steps to streamline my life. From decluttering my physical space to reducing my digital distractions, I want to create an environment that fosters calmness and clarity. By eliminating unnecessary complexities, I'm freeing up time and energy to focus on what truly brings me joy and fulfilment.
With all the appointments and challenges of the past few years I’ve not been my usual communicative self. I have forgotten birthdays and failed to reply to many messages. With Simplify as my word of the year, I am reminded to prioritise quality time with family and friends, it doesn’t need to be fancy dinner parties (I do so love having those), just simply tea and biscuits, meeting when we can. And if meeting in person isn’t possible then sending cards, letters and even use my phone to actually call someone! Slowing down, simplifying.
Simplifying also means taking care of myself, the past 18 months have been full of physio as a I recover from knee injury and although this has been a form of self-care it has been intense and time consuming. As physio continues it’s time to start introducing – or reintroducing good habits, setting boundaries and saying no to things that drain my energy. This also means taking one morning a month off and simplify going for a coffee and reading a novel. Rest is important, it’s time to slow down and start saying no – simplifying.
Keeping the Word of the Year Top of Mind
Let's face it, some days are harder than others. Life throws curveballs, and it’s easy to lose sight of our intentions. That's why I created the “Word-of-the-Year Star Decoration”. This personalised star serves as a reminder to keep my word top of mind, especially on difficult days. Placed somewhere visible, it's a gentle nudge to stay focused and make choices aligned with my focus for the year.
Choosing a word of the year has been a game-changer for me, and I encourage you to give it a try. Whether it's Simplify, Grow, Adventure, or any other word that resonates with your heart, let it guide you towards a more intentional, fulfilling life. Remember, it's the small steps and consistent effort that lead to big transformations. You can read more about how to choose your word of the year in this blog post.
